What works is the charge-shot system. Holding fire builds charge; releasing fires beam shot proportional to charge time.

Where the design earns its rating is the boss design. Each level ends with a boss that has a unique attack pattern.
Where I would push back is the difficulty curve. Normal mode is too easy; expert is too hard. Hard mode is the only viable middle ground.
